Inspired #353 - Alexa Cappelli

South Californian artist Alexa Cappelli talks us though the inspirations behind her music and latest big pop track of hers ‘Whiplash’.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Creatively, I frequently get inspiration from songwriters like Ryan Tedder, Taylor Swift and Julia Michaels. Julia’s artistry and tone is also very unique and I admire that, you can always tell if she’s written on a song, almost like it has her print on it. They are all such great story tellers and know how to write a killer melody.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I don’t watch too many movies, some say I live under a rock in that department. BUT my all time favorite movie is the original Jumanji. Hope that counts.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
It depends on the type of inspiration. If I’m in LA, I’m always super encouraged and inspired by the other artists around me to keep working hard for my dreams and goals. It is uplifting to see them doing the same thing. There’s power in that. But as far as the actual writing and creating goes, I prefer to be somewhere with a slower pace. I am an internal processor, and a lot of times, an internal writer, and I love being places where there’s plenty of space for that.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
God is my number one always, all the glory goes UP from me. He blessed me with my listeners and especially my brother (also manager). They inspire me to do what I do and if it weren’t for them I really don’t know where I’d be.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I was inspired by my lack of emotional risk taking and deleting Bumble after only 4 days. As self deprecating as that sounds, I can at least say that I have now grown out of that a little bit. This song was healing in a way for me, as it revealed that I don’t want to stay stuck in my head, afraid of losing people, and therefore never letting myself love. Loss is inevitable in some ways, but apparently it’s worth it. <3

How would you like to inspire people?
Music is unifying. It can build up or tear down, internally or externally, and I want to be a part of the good kinds. I think we should always build each other up. I want to build others up with my music and my words. If I’m ever tearing anything down, I want to tear down the ways I’ve lived and thought about myself that doesn’t bring life. I think songs like Whiplash may seem like hurtful avoidance on the surface, but really it’s the beginning of a journey to finally acknowledge what I already know I need in all the love and life I take part in.
