Inspired #202 - Tulliah
Australian artist Tulliah talks us through the inspirations behind her infectious new track ‘Distant Dreams’ - the latest taster from her debut EP ‘Fre$h Hugs’, due out the 12th March.
Who are your top three musical inspirations?
My top three musical inspirations are Radiohead, Tame Impala and The Beatles. Their musical abilities just blow me away and whenever I watch a video of either of these guys playing, I am in complete awe. Even though I’m not there in person and it’s through a screen, their presence when performing feels so magical.
Is there a certain film that inspires you?
A couple of years ago “The Notebook” was a movie that I would write quite a lot of songs about haha. That movie makes me cry every time. I recently watched “Lost In Translation” and found it so beautiful. All the colours in the film and the still shots seemed so simple. It made me think of music. I want my music to simply create images and colours in people's heads when they listen to it.
What city do you find the most inspiring?
I actually haven’t really been to many cities besides ones in Australia. I love catching the train to Melbourne because I seem to find inspiration just observing and thinking. You can find inspiration anywhere though, it’s just a matter of opening your mind.
Who is the most inspiring person to you?
They’re a lot of people. I am lucky to be surrounded by family and friends who are very kind and loving. Music wise, I am inspired by Dean Tuza (my producer), who is a crazy talented individual that has opened my eyes up to the creative world. Damien Platt (my manager), who works so hard while still being a very down to earth person. And also my singing teacher Alanna Deutrom, who is the kindest person you’ll ever meet. She has helped me overcome so many doubts over the past 6 years and has been there from the very start.
What were your inspirations when writing your new single?
It was inspired by a painting which sits above my piano. My mum read out the title “Distant Dreams” while they were moving it (hence the name of the song). I was sitting at the piano and the song flowed out of me pretty freely. It’s written from the perspective of being in a dream where all your dreams have been accomplished and your worries/doubts have disappeared.
How would you like to inspire people?
In any way. To have an impact on someone would be the ultimate goal and is probably one the best compliments you could get :)
