Introducing #115 - Grace Gaustad

Out Of Time.jpg

Let us introduce you to rising singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Grace Gaustad, who has just released her infectious new single ‘Out Of Time’. She took a moment to talk to us her obsession with pop music, living in Los Angeles and how her new track came together.

Hey there Grace, so your track ‘Out Of Time’ is out now - can you tell us what the track is about?
Out Of Time is about the idea that we live in such a superficial world where we don’t spend enough time thinking or caring about truly important things like spending time with the people we love and doing the things we love. Time is not endless and we tend to take things for granted. Out Of Time really captures the fear that one day we’ll look around and realize we’ve run out of time and there's no way to turn it back.

It was co-written with Scott Effman - who has worked with the likes of Sody, Blithe and more. How did this partnership come about? How did you find the experience of working with him?
I met Scott through our mutual friend Jason Jordan, former SVP of A&R at Republic Records, about 3 years ago. Scott is a frequent collaborator of mine and one of my best friends. We always have the best time creating music and making ideas come to life. We make a great team and compliment each other really well!

It is the first taster of your forthcoming EP - when can we get to hear that?
I have a few more singles coming out before the official EP comes out, but you can expect After Dark I to drop in spring.

You are based in Los Angeles - what are your favorite things about being there?
I think that Los Angeles functions as a hub for creatives and that is my favorite thing about it. I’ve met so many other artists here and it’s so nice to feel a sense of community within the industry. The weather is also amazing! I definitely do not miss those east coast winters.

From a young age you were obsessed with pop music and took part in a lot of school theatre. What are your fondest memories from this period of your life?
My favorite memory from that time in my life was getting to play a different character in every performance. Theater allowed me the freedom to express myself through many different lenses. I also had an incredible teacher who was so supportive and taught me so much about performing on stage. I still use her performance tricks to this day! She always told me to look at the back of the room if I was ever feeling nervous and it's one of the most helpful things ever.

The EP will be accompanied by a collection of poetry and artwork - do have any favorite poets you like reading?
I read a ridiculous amount of poetry but I think my top 3 poets would have to be Edgar Allen Poe, Rupi Kaur, & RM Drake.

What are your key influences when writing music?
My key influences when writing music are a combination of my childhood idols like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Amy Winehouse, & Rihanna to name a few.
