Felix Saunders - 'King of Nothing'
Western Isles based singer songwriter Felix Saunders reflects on some of his life’s lowest moments on gritty indie folk pop single, ‘King Of Nothing.’
What is instantly noticeable about Felix Saunders’s music is that it’s real and it’s raw. In its own right, ‘King Of Nothing’ is a fairly subdued number, but bleak works well here and Saunders knows his way around an affecting guitar melody, including an awesome guitar solo. There’s also a tight, laid back drum melody that stalks its way through the woozier layers of the track, providing the song with an anchor amidst the sadness. But it’s not all bleak, the song chimes with subtle melodic nuances that offers a comforting tenderness to the piece.
Saunder’s raspy indie folk vocal is thoroughly captivating and packs a huge emotional punch as his confessional lyricism explores feelings of worthlessness in the face of being hit by some huge losses in 2020 such as losing his flat, job and girlfriend during a nervous breakdown. But if anything can be said about Saunders is that he knows how to roll with the punches. There’s a stark beauty and admirable resilience to the way Saunders has threaded so many painful experiences into a song that really does nestle deep into the very heart of its listener. Through turning pain into productivity and sharing his experiences, we hope Saunders may have started to find hope again.
