Greywind - 'Am I Asleep?'
Greywind’s comeback single ‘Am I Asleep?’ is a banger proving the Irish duo are a rock force not to be slept on.
Siblings Steph & Paul O’Sullivan emerged as Greywind amid a significant media buzz around their early releases and 2017 debut album ‘Afterthoughts’. Following the hype, could their future ever live up to that?
This follow-up track dispels any of those concerns, and sees them bursting out of the town of Killarney and onto bigger things.
‘Am I Asleep?’ opens with atmospheric guitars, and then builds a brooding soundscape which shows the duo’s musicianship and continued potential.
Steph’s strong vocals bring another element to the table, as she sings about the art of being human, singing: “I died again, I have given up / I died again, things are looking up”.
There is an anthemic chorus, and a dramatic flair, aided with the rich instrumentation of Paul’s guitar. And when Steph sings “I’ll never cope”, it feels tender and poetic without being too soft.
The sweeping finale proves the power of the expansive blockbuster, which has channelled their experiences at festivals including Download and Rock am Ring to make something electrifying, and hopefully flying to a rock stage near you when the time allows.
Producer Romesh Dogangoda brings years of experience working with the likes of Bring Me The Horizon and Motorhead to the track. It’s a lofty ambition to get that big, but ‘Am I Asleep?’ captures you and won’t let go. You cannot sleep on Greywind – not that you could.
