DAYA – 'Bad Girl'
Following the release of last year’s comeback single ‘First Time’, Daya shares electrifying new single ‘Bad Girl’.
With euphoric electronica and a dark, trance-like atmosphere, ‘Bad Girl’ falls in the dancing with your eyes closed category. Driven by big beats and intoxicating vocals, Daya creates a hypnotic soundscape that evokes nostalgic images of sweaty bodies moving to the rhythm. Her lyricism is heavily influenced by her own experiences confronting her bisexuality as well as her identity as a woman. “I’ve grappled with my femininity for a long time. I didn’t like being called ‘pretty’ when I was younger and didn’t like subscribing to conventional beauty standards,” Daya explains. “But as I’ve grown into my sexuality and throughout my relationship, I’ve felt more at home in my femininity, physically and emotionally, mainly because my femininity is no longer ‘required’ or defined by being with a man.”
Sparkling with confidence, ‘Bad Girl’ asserts Daya’s reign over the synthpop sphere, and single-handedly redefines what it means to be a “bad girl”. No more negative connotations, from here on it’s independent vibes only. As Daya puts it: “a ‘bad girl’ can be anyone who is confident and asserts themselves boldly in the world and doesn’t necessarily have to adhere to the stereotypical bad girl ‘look, but rather can appear anywhere on the binary from leather jackets & boots to red lips and dresses and pearls.”
