Introducing #127 - moshimoshi
Let us introduce you to Helsinki band moshimoshi, who have just released their debut track ‘Igotlostinsidemyhead’. Their sound combines melodic indie pop, mathematically precise jazz elements and punk-inspired raw emotion - they took a moment to talk to us about their music.
Hey there moshimoshi - how are you? So your debut single is our now, how does it feel to have it finally out there in the world?
Hi! Aatu here, We are fine thanks. It feels good. I think it’s getting more attention that we would have thought. This song was the first one we ever made for this band so it’s good to start with this one.
It is titled ‘Igotlostinsidemyhead’ - can you tell us what it is about?
Well basically it’s just about being unaware of the future. Getting lost within your own thoughts and trying to deal with them
So where does the name moshimoshi come from? And how did the band start?
I think Janne (drummer) came up with that name and we thought it’s simple and kind of funny so why not use it. Also coming up with a name for a band can be pretty frustrating so we just went with the first one.
There is quite a blend of sounds on this track - ranging from jazz to punk. What are your key influences when it comes to your music?
Well when we started the band we were listening to a lot of bands like Algernon Cadwallader, Cap n Jazz and Mars Volta so I think those bands have been a big influence for our sound. But I think we found our ”own sound” pretty early. Nowadays I’m just trying to make songs that sounds like moshimoshi.
You are based in Helsinki - what is your favorite thing about living there? And where do you go for adventures?
I think the best part of living in Helsinki is that nearly all our friends live in here too. Before covid there were lots of gigs in town where you could meet up with friends etc. Now we just hang at our rehersal place when it’s ok or skate.
The band started just before Covid took over the world - how does it feel to be a band so fresh in their existence - trying to make an impact in the music industry?
Actually band started after covid took over. I got laid off from my day job and had lots of spare time to play guitar and start making my own music for the first time in years. And I don’t know about making any impact, we just make music that we love to play and hopefully people that like this kind of music get to hear it.
Now this track is out there - what next for you?
Next we will release the first EP which will be out by the end of April. We will also release two more EP:s in the year 2021 and when the third one comes out we will publish a ”Trilogy LP” with our Finnish label All That Plazz.
