EP Review: Laufey – Typical of Me
Rising Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter Laufey introduces her gorgeously reminiscent sound on debut EP ‘Typical of Me’.
In a world obsessed with the future, there is something to be said about artists who sound like they belong into a whole different era. Laufey is one of them. With her deeply resonant vocals and delicate soundscapes infused with elements of classical music, she would effortlessly fit in during the high times of jazz. Soulful melody lines and a vintage atmosphere leave to suggest that there is an old soul at work behind her craft. Whether she is writing a love letter to women who don’t recognise their beauty on ‘Magnolia’, dreaming of a perfect love story on ‘Like The Movies’, or finding strength in forgiveness on ‘I Wish You Love’, Laufey excels at making stories come to life with her music.
Standout track ‘Someone New’ is the devastatingly beautiful heart and soul of the EP. Carried by a tender piano and Laufey’s crackling vocals, it addresses the hardest part of moving on: Facing the truth and making peace with the present. “There’s no amount of wealth that could ease this poor goodbye, soften the fall from your sky,” she sings, wrapped into a blanket of strings, and gives free reign to her sorrow.
With ‘Typical of Me’, Laufey has created a debut record that perfectly captures her unique blend of gentle jazz melodies and slow-burning beats. A thrilling combination that makes her standout in the current music landscape and puts her on the map as one of the most exciting artists of the year.
