Introducing #130 - Sukie

Let us introduce you to Manchester born but Bath based newcomer Sukie, who has just released her new single ‘Pink’ - an infectious track filled with that summery bop vibe that is paired with funny-yet-sad lyrics. She took a moment to talk to us about her music.

Hey there Sukie - how are you? So your new track ‘Pink’ is out now, can you tell us what it is about?
I’m good thanks! Pink is about growing up being unsure of yourself, I guess. I see so many of my old high school acquaintances on FaceBook reminiscing about the ‘good old days’ in science class or whatever, and I just don’t get it. I was so confused as a teenager and I kind of hated the school/college years. I was constantly questioning my bisexuality and I remember my first boyfriend (who I dated when we were like 12 haha) coming out as gay. I was so jealous of him being secure in his sexuality when I wasn’t.

You were raised in Manchester, what are your earliest fond memories of living there?
One of my earliest memories of Manchester is walking around with my grandad when I was a kid. Once he mistook a guy he had seen on Coronation Street for someone he knew in real life and we had a chat with him haha. Poor guy had no idea who we were, but at least I met someone from Corrie.

You now live in Bath though, so where do you go for adventures?
I moved here during lockdown so the only adventures I’ve been able to go on have been walking around outside and going to the supermarket for ingredients for tea. Bath is so nice though, there’s a really lovely botanical garden not far from my flat, and there’s honestly about 20 parks in a 30 minute radius from where I live, so I can’t wait for summer.

What are your key influences when it comes to your music?
There’s literally so many. All-time favourites are bands like Talking Heads, The B-52s, LCD Soundsystem, that kind of thing. Lately I’ve been listening to so much pop by female artists, Britney, Madonna, M.I.A, Doja Cat, Biig Piig. Good pop songs have been an absolute lifeline for me during the pandemic.

If someone had never listened to your music before, how would you describe it?
Probably… soft pop? Bedroom pop maybe? For this new E.P. my goal was for the music to be fun, something that would be good to play live, and the production has definitely stepped up. So I think it’s venturing more into the pop world now, which is so exciting!

Now the new track is out there, what next for you?
I have three more tracks coming your way in the next few months! They’re all part of my upcoming E.P. - ‘Hey Cutie’ - which is coming out in June! Keep your eyes peeled on my socials for dates, I can’t wait to get all this new stuff out there for people to hear.
