EP Review: Zoe Wees – 'Golden Wings'
If you’re a sucker for euphoric sad songs, German newcomer Zoe Wees should be at the top of your list of exciting new talent. On debut EP ‘Golden Wings’ she creates a whirlwind of stunning pop melodies.
After flexing her songwriting muscles and unmatched vocal prowess on debut single ‘Control’, ‘Golden Wings’ sees Zoe bundle her pain and send it out into the world in form of five devastatingly beautiful tracks that not only heal her own wounds but offer catharsis for others. As Zoe explains: “Each of the songs are autobiographical and very special to me. In a way‚ the EP was written as personal therapy, with each track helping tackle my own mental health. I chose the title ‘Golden Wings’ to symbolize the feeling of ‘security and strength.’ These two things are foundations from where hope can grow. I hope people can relate to my stories in their own way.”
Coupling driving beats and slow-burning hooks with poignant lyricism and irresistibly urgent vocals, songs like ‘Ghost’ and standout single ‘Hold Me Like You Used To’ shine a light on Zoe’s innate ability to capture a distinct feeling within her sound.
At the same time delicate yet extremely powerful, ‘Golden Wings’ leaves no room for doubt that Zoe Wees is an important new voice and refreshing addition to the current pop landscape. With only a handful of songs under her belt, Zoe has already created a space for herself where raw emotion and sonic euphoria collide. This debut EP shows that there is much more to uncover and it’s going to an exhilarating ride.
