Thomas LaVine - 'Open Sea'

Tune into the sweet indie folk murmurs of Thomas Lavine’s cathartic current single, ‘Open Sea’

‘Open Sea’ begins with serene sensory textures. The track transports its listener to the ocean, through nuances that draw to mind the soft gurgles of water kissing the shore and the ocean’s breeze whistling in its listener’s ears. Thomas Lavine’s vocal is exposed, floaty and ethereal, seeing Thomas set so much of a tranquil scene that you almost forget the melancholy in lyrics such as: ‘I laid in the water, I let it take me, and there was a constant hollow sound, ‘til I heard your voice’.

As the track develops, edgy drum patterns give the track a suspenseful galloping rhythm, perfectly leading the track into an all-encompassing, ambient and otherworldly post-rock-leaning climax. What’s great about this track is that it combines sad pop/ easy-listening melodies , with subtle rocky textures.

‘Open Sea’ is a beautifully honest and vast song that allows its listener to step out of the prisons of their mind and draw strength from the awe-inspiring beauty of the natural world. It’s that first gulp of fresh air and the outstretched hand bringing you home after being under water for too long.
