Angus Powell - 'Holding Up The Heavy'

Angus Powell is 'Holding Up The Heavy' on his emotive current single, taken from his forthcoming EP H U T H due for release early this year.

At the end of October 2021, Welsh artist Angus Powell returned from a four-year hiatus from music with the compelling single ‘Holding Up The Heavy’ - recorded, produced and co-written in Berlin with German writer/ producers Christian Neander (Selig/Christina Stürmer etc) and Jem (Udo Lindenburg/Andreas Bourani).

‘Holding Up The Heavy’ shows off a more determined, polished and fuller indie folk sound than Angus’s rootsy and well received 2017 album, Before The Grey, a record which was commissioned by MTV to use across their in-house shows.

Pulsating beats and affecting guitar lines robustly support Angus’s signature haunting vocal, seeing the track shiver with the raw emotion we’ve grown accustomed to from Angus. Here, we are witnessing the breakdown of communication and trust in a relationship in real-time. While the track is thematically disheartened and troubled, there’s a forward-motion fluidity to the song, seeing the track thrillingly driven by elegant commercial-leaning melodies. This provides a sense of urgency as a last ditch attempt at optimism is realised in the imploring lyrics: “But if there’s any air left in these old lungs, let’s shout it down the valley, and if there’s any hope left, let’s dig it up.”

This is the first time Angus has co-written any of his music and while there’s a clear progression to his sound, Angus retains his own sense of identity, intimacy, and the organic and airy folk bones that has seen his music championed many times in the past.
