Pillow Queens - 'Be By Your Side'
With a new album waiting in the wings, Dublin’s Pillow Queens have unveiled a slow burning but triumphant lead single ‘Be By Your Side’.
Like an old Flybe plane, the track takes a little while to get the propellers up to speed but when it eventually takes flight and arrives at its final destination, any pre-take off doubts have long since vanished into thin air.
The fuzzy guitar build-up stands proudly centre stage, grabbing the headlines in the closing stages of the song. It’s the drums though from Rachel Lyons in the background which feel like the secret weapon and give the song so much power which allows it to really spring to life in the latter moments.
Fans of the band’s 2020 debut ‘In Waiting’ won’t be disappointed to hear the quartet aren’t drifting too far into unchartered territory with this one. All of the character and endearing qualities of the first album are still there to see. That said, there is still signs of a healthy progression from album one, perhaps most noticeably in the enhanced silky yet vulnerable vocals which reminded me of 2015 Chastity Belt.
All going well, a run of Irish and North American shows in March are followed by the release of the ‘Leave The Light On’ LP, and they cap off a busy few months with a UK tour in May.
