Moodring - 'Disintegrate'
I don't know what colour ‘epic-heavy-instrumentation-but-ethereal-vocals’ would be on a mood ring, but that’s the colour this track gives us.
Following their explosive 2021 debut-album, Showmetherealyou, Moodring have opened the year with masterpiece ‘Disintegrate’. Bringing the drifting voice reminiscent of Deftones’ Chino Moreno and a filthy distorted bass of early Korn, Moodring elevate and modernised everything wonderful about ’90s alternative metal. Whilst their album carries a sense of brooding bitterness, ‘Disintegrate’ brings something more hopeful and uplifting – which we could all use right now.
If you’re a fan of Deftones, you’ll appreciate the spine-tingling ecstasy that tracks like ‘Pink Maggit’ and ‘Minerva’ hit you with: ‘Disintegrate’ captures that same bittersweet feeling of euphoria and moroseness. Opening with that rumbling bass we know and love, topped off with strong, reverberated drums and stunning, piercing synths, ‘Disintegrate’ reads and feels like a hymn to a dying love. The drama of the music amplifies the drama of the lyrics, musing over God, death and the pain of love and loss. The vocals are quiet but powerful and provide a form of intimacy amongst the turmoiled background of minor chords. Although there is a hint of hopefulness that is engrained throughout, nothing cheers one up like the finality of our demise: “The coffin is calling you home…”
Overall, this latest release is a marker for Moodring’s progression as a band, maturing from a sour anguish to a sound and atmosphere that captures more beauty and tenderness within dark and heavy subject matter.
Moodring will do anything but disintegrate, as this stunning single paves the way for more content like it in the future.
