Introducing #200 - The Kaves

Let us introduce you to Scottish indie band The Kaves - who have relit the flame of that classic indie rock sound with their debut single ‘Migraines’. Fusing together a blend of the guitar sound of the Libertines and mixing it with that raw vocals style you get from early records by the Strokes. They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Hey there the Kaves, how are you? So your debut track was called ‘Migraines’ - can you tell us what it is about?
The song is about growing out of love with situations and people. Not one particular person or situation but when you realise you are getting to a point that there are enough signs and frustrations to make a change. Noticing that some of the hardest decisions can become the most positive ones. There is also probably a bit of self reflection in the lyrics, as you get older the less you put up with and start to think if it’s not for me then I'll just not do it... and it’s completely fine to think that way. That Migraines I’d say.

How did the band start? Why are you called The Kaves?
The band was started in 2020 after Dave (vocals and guitar) and Liam (lead guitarist) met through "join my band" online. Struggling to get connection or commitment with other musicians and entering a lockdown Liam's younger brother Sean (Bass) then joined a year after. We used a drum machine in most of the first songs for a year and played in our living rooms until studios/gigs started back up post lockdown. Our drummer Evan joined a month before the recording of Migraines, so it was all pretty fast. "The Kaves" came from an idea that from the very beginning our guitar tones always incorporated a lot of echo with delays and reverb and as a band we all love the idea of our tracks incorporating a "wall of sound" something which has been developed in our upcoming tunes.

Where are you based? Where do you like to go for adventures?
We are based in Glasgow, funnily enough 3 of the members stay in Pollok having never met before joining the band! We often travel around for festivals, we all have different tastes in music as well so seeing artists from other genres and taking it back to rehearsals to incorporate into our own sound is a great way we have developed.

What are the key influences in your music?
We all bring our own influences to the table, if i was to pick a genre we all have a similar interest in it would be indie/alternative. We have all grown up listening to the likes of The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys Oasis and The Stone Roses.. but we all have other interests. Liam is into his shoegaze, I like bands which would be seen as heavier like The Smashing Pumpkins/Deftones. Sean (bass) loves his classic rock, Guns and Roses, Stereophonics and Evan is into dance music and Hip hop. So we all bring different genres to the table which I think is getting more evident the longer we play.

What are your plans for the next for months?
We are due to release our second single "What's in your head" next month which we are all excited for, we think it will show a different side to us. We also have an upcoming headline gig at Nice and Sleazys Glasgow in April along with other gigs lined up in Scotland and England. On top of that we have plans to record a few new songs in Edinburgh ahead of the summer. So it's going to be an exciting year!
