EP Review: Wallows - ‘More’
More, showcases Wallows’ ever-evolving sound, blending indie rock, pop, and existential reflections into a captivating collection that further solidifies their place in the alternative music scene.
With the release of, More, Wallows, the American alternative rock trio from Los Angeles, continue to captivate with their signature blend of indie pop, rock, and cinematic ambition. This seven-track EP is both an evolution of their sound and a further testament to the creative chemistry between bandmates Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston. It’s an offering that pushes boundaries while remaining rooted in the intimacy of their music, encapsulating everything that’s made Wallows a standout in the indie scene.
Lead single ‘Your New Favorite Song’ is undeniably a high point. From the very first notes, it feels like a sonic embrace—a lush, horn-infused indie-rock anthem that balances cinematic grandeur with a personal, introspective core. Minnette’s voice rides the line between vulnerability and strength, delivering lyrics that express both longing and release. The track’s production, helmed by GRAMMY-winning producer John Congleton, creates a dynamic backdrop that ebbs and flows in a way that mirrors the emotional landscape of the song. From the delicate guitar plucks to the bold brass swells, ‘Your New Favorite Song’ is destined to be a staple in Wallows’ live sets and a track that fans will keep coming back to time and again.
Following this is the propulsive ‘Coffin Change’, which channels existential questions into an irresistibly infectious groove. With its punchy drumbeats and chantable chorus, it’s a track that blends an alt-rock energy with a deeper, more philosophical edge. The lyrics reflect on the fleeting nature of time, life, and death, asking whether we’re truly living or merely passing through. ‘Coffin Change’ encapsulates the band’s knack for combining catchy hooks with existential musings—an earworm with substance, sure to resonate with listeners long after the final notes fade.
The EP, as a whole, sees Wallows refining their craft while still managing to surprise. Tracks like ‘Not Alone’ and ‘Learn to Love Again’ offer a mix of dreamy bedroom pop with the band's classic alternative rock roots, pushing the boundaries of what indie rock can encompass. Meanwhile, ‘Hide It Away’ delivers an atmospheric, introspective vibe that feels both intimate and expansive, allowing the listener to get lost in its layered instrumentation and heartfelt lyrics.
Even the ‘Deep Dive (Reprise)’ rounds out the EP in a way that enhances its thematic core. The reprise is a beautiful reimagining, adding a sense of closure while still leaving the door open for what comes next. It feels like the final piece of the puzzle, a moment of reflection that underscores the emotional journey of the entire EP.
As Wallows continue to evolve, they’ve managed to keep their signature sound fresh and exciting, blending elements of folk, post-punk, psychedelia, and electronic music. More, is a reflection of everything the band has accomplished thus far while looking ahead to even greater heights. It’s introspective yet expansive, energetic yet tender, and undeniably engaging from start to finish.
So, is, More, a standout in their growing discography? Absolutely. Wallows have once again proven that their ability to push the envelope while staying true to their roots is what sets them apart. Give it a listen, and you'll see why Wallows are making it impossible to say no to whatever they release next.
