Inspired #390 - Michael Aldag

Up-and-coming singer/songwriter and producer, Michael Aldag returns with his latest installment of indie-pop gold with new single ‘Okay’.

The song is a huge, evocative track that channels feelings of self-doubt and depression with a huge melody and sing-a-long chorus that shows Michael’s listeners that there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Aldag continues to showcase his ability to weave his personal struggles into shimmering, alt-pop gems.

“‘OKAY’ is about acknowledging your flaws however much you might hate them and moving forward regardless” Michael explains. “My own worst enemy is myself and I suppose I wrote this song to remember that.”

He took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind his music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Baby Keem, The 1975, The Smiths currently. Baby Keem’s production melodies and lyrics are really good, I love the way he speaks on songs, so informally. Same with The 1975. The Smiths are just great, great to be happy-sad to.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I love The Wind That Shakes The Barley. And there’s a version of Macbeth that I love. I got told off for saying that on a first date once because it sounds pompous and it does but it makes me sound a bit clever so you know.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Liverpool for sure. I love London too and make a lot of music but Liverpool is my home so my whole life has been here really and in that there are lots of experiences to draw from.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
My dad. He’s really really boring so I’m inspired to try and be less boring than him.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
OKAY I wrote when I was 16, I think I was lost, in between friend groups and not entirely sure of myself. I’d like to say I can’t relate to it 4 years on but I can and in some ways moreso. I hope if anyone is in a situation like that that this song can help.

How would you like to inspire people?
I’m not sure. I’d just like people to hear my music and like it and relate to it and make their life a bit better in some small way.
