Introducing #250 - Girl Scout

Let us introduce you yo Stockholm-based newcomers Girl Scout - who have just released their debut single ‘Do You Remember Sally Moore?’ via Made Records.

The four-piece have just completed a run of debut festival dates in Scandinavia this summer, and earlier in the year supported BRITs Rising Star award winner Holly Humberstone at her sold-out shows at Manchester’s Academy 2 and London’s 02 Forum Kentish Town.

A striking statement of intent, ‘Do You Remember Sally Moore?’ is a thunderous ‘80s and ‘90s-inspired garage rock cut that tells the story of tumultuous teenage love. Commenting on the single, Girl Scout say: “‘Do You Remember Sally Moore?’ was written as a homage to the absolute knockdown experience of going through high school. The original idea and overall story was created with visual inspiration from TV shows like Sex Education and Stranger Things, influenced by their portrayal of friendship, humour, and overwhelming emotions.”

They continue: “Part of the story was co-written with old school friend Tobias Ekelund, and our shared experiences and friendship helped fuel the storytelling and emotional connection to the song. We used to fall in love with older, cooler girls, and we’d spend our lunch breaks in the school canteen dreaming about building up the courage to talk to them. Of course in the end we never did, and they had absolutely no idea who we were… so ‘Sally’ might be a representation of that hopeless yet wonderful one-way street kind of love.”

They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Hey Girl Scout, how are you? So your debut track ‘Do You Remember Sally Moore?’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Excited! We just came back from our first real interview with a Swedish newspaper, and over the moon about all the positive feedback we have gotten about Sally! To be honest, Sally Moore’s real identity is a state secret! All we can say is that she’s a person that you had a crush on in high school, also she’s two years older than you and has no idea who you are.. It’s actually one of the first songs that we finished as Girl Scout, and we made a demo for it back in early 2021, which feels like a lifetime ago!

Where are you from and what are your favorite things to do there?
Emma is from the west coast of Sweden, Evelina and Viktor from Stockholm, and Per from up north but these days all of us live in Stockholm. You’ll usually find us at a dingy bar somewhere in Södermalm during the weekends, wherever the beer is cheap. We played By:Larm in Oslo recently and noticed that the other Scandinavian capitals, (no offense Sweden) are way cooler than Stockholm, there’s like nothing to do here. Stockholm is like Copenhagen and Oslo’s stuffy cousin, but there are some good spots if you know where to look, and it’s quite pretty. Wish we had more music venues and cool bars though!

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
Old stuff like Beatles and Beach Boys, semi old stuff like Elliot Smith and Radiohead and modern stuff like Phoebe Bridgers and Big Thief.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
00’s indie rock mixed with influences from 60s songwriting. People have said our sound reminds them of Snail Mail, the Beths and Alvvays.

Now the track is out there, what is next for you?
Evelina just got a job at a museum shop, Per has picked up bread baking, Emma is really getting into country music and nobody really knows what Viktor the enigma is up to. Everywhere you go with him he bumps into someone he knows, I don’t know where he meets them all?
There will also be more music out very soon! And we are always recording demos and writing more stuff so if everything goes according to plan there will be a lot more out a year from now. We’re playing a couple shows in the UK in November and we have some shows planned in Sweden in the upcoming months. There’s a bunch of other stuff too that we can’t tell you about just yet!
