Introducing #254 - ava zarate

Let us introduce you to West London’s ava zarate - a producer / singer-songwriter who has just released her upcoming single ‘O GIRL’. - which are fueled with everything from soul, jazz, pop, beats, hip-hop and dance.

After self-producing most of her previous releases, Ava collaborated with upcoming producer Mom Tudie (SAHRA, edbl, College Music) and the pair wrote, recorded and produced the track in a day. After a short break away from releasing, Ava is coming back with a fresh and ever increasingly distinct sound. Inspired by other artists such as Steve Lacey, Erika de Casier, Jim Legxacy, JPEGMafia and Yellow Days. ava zarate seeks to draw inspiration from these artists whilst creating her own unique sound.

Now ready to unveil her new found sound to the world, Ava took a moment to talk to us about her music.

Hey there Ava - how are you? So your track ‘O Girl)’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Hey! I'm good. It's nice to be here talking. O GIRL is a bit of a messy bundle of feelings. Feelings of isolation, love, belonging, dependency are all in there. I think I needed this release so I could work through how I felt. There is no concrete basis which I quite like about it. Everyone will take their own meaning from it anyway.

Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
I am from West London. Born and raised in Ladbroke Grove. Favourite things to do would be Hampstead Heath walks, Portobello market friday morning, Lisboa coffee and nata on Golborne road and seeing BFI Southbank films. Many more things but those are some of the best.

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
I think my key influences are always what's around me at that time. Life wise but also what I am listening to. At the moment, there are some artists that I feel very moved by like Erika de Casier, Jim Legxacy and Steve Lacey. I think that elements of them are appearing in the music I make at the moment. Then there is just general life. What''s good, what's hurting, what's happening and that completely influences my music

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
The sound I have with this new song is quite different to what I have put out before. So judging from this song someone described it as 'comfy trap' haha. I think it's quite a good description. Soulful trap? I am not really sure how to describe it.

Now the track is out there - what next for you?
A lot more to come. More music. Let's see!
