In Conversation With #172 - Queen Cult
Femme-queer fronted four piece rock band Queen Cult release their debut EP, ‘Woman That I Know’. After a small pandemic imposed hiatus, they have returned with four tracks of brutal in your face, hard hitting indie rock, taking influence from the likes of Paramore, Black Keys and Royal Blood. They took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.
Hey there Queen Cult, how are you? So your debut EP is finally here, how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
It feels amazing considering we haven’t been able to release anything for a long time. It’s almost like a rebirth kind of. But yeah. Sick mate.
It is called ‘Woman That I know’ - what is the meaning behind that?
Due to things like lockdown; When you stare at the same four walls long enough, you really have no choice but to start to look at yourself; and the world around you. You end up questioning everything and with that, slightly losing a sense of self identity, so it’s referencing becoming the woman you once were and more, with personal growth.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
We recorded our EP with Sam Bloor in Stoke. Coming back after not releasing anything in a couple years; we wanted to incorporate our rock live sound that people are familiar with along with our pop hooks. In all honesty the only behind the scenes stories we have from recording the EP is the amount of road works we ran into in Stoke. They never end.
What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
To name a few: late Paramore, Foals, Idles, Royal Blood, The Police, Led Zeppelin (in terms of drum style), Alabama Shakes and Black Keys.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
Our favourite lyric is from our single ‘Show and Tell’; “why don’t we just eat some cake”. It’s a reference to Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. She was undeniably oblivious to the suffering of the lower class and with that infamously quoted as saying “let them eat cake”. We find it remarkably comparable to the government’s ineptitude on handling and helping the public; specifically the working class. You work in the creative arts? Just re-train then? You got let go as the company you work for went under and now you struggle to feed your children? Not our problem! Get Markus Rashfield to help you. Oh you want to see your dying grandparent? Well, no, you’re not allowed…However we’ll have private parties and travel across the UK when it suits us. Why don’t we just eat some cake then? Fuck the tories lol:)
Now the EP is out there, what next for you?
Lots of dates. We intend to stay on the road as much as possible this year and hopefully some new music soon ahead of this EP.
