Inspired #353 - Michelle Ullestad

Michelle Ullestad, the 27-year-old Norwegian singer and songwriter who writes and sings in Norwegian, released her first single for the Bergen-based GEMS label late last year in the form of the bright indie anthem "Emilie" Now, with her second EP due later in the year, she has released her brand new track ‘Sol’.

She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Taylor Swift is my number one musical inspiration, also just in life. She’s such a talented songwriter, and a fierce business woman. She’s kind to her fans and her friends. I really love her, and she’s been my top artist every year since “Our Song” came out. Also I love Aurora, her voice and presence is so hypnotizing. Billie Eilish is super inspiring, I listened to her first EP on repeat. As well as her first album which was perfect in every way.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I forget the name of the movies I watch, and lately I haven’t been watching movies. I’ve been binging One Tree Hill ever since I got corona in December. I love that show, and the characters. But that’s a lot of trauma for a small town, haha!

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
I find Oslo very inspiring. It’s the biggest city in Norway, and when I’m there I feel so free. People are so different, and nobody cares. You can just be yourself, and that’s very comforting. I also love Bergen, where I live. But it’s very rainy, and my mental health appreciates the sun way more than rain.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
My mom. She’s had a very tough childhood and challenges thrown her way, but she’s so strong and kind. She’s very easy to love I think, and I look up to her and how she carries herself and the people around her.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I was inspired by a song called “Med lighteren” by a Norwegian duo called ka2, at least the instrumental of the demo. When I was writing the lyrics, I wanted to capture the light and love of the sun, and the sadness of the darkness that is winter depression. So that was my inspiration.

How would you like to inspire people?
I want people to feel hope, and motivation. That they can take risks in life, because sometimes it really pays off. Especially if you work hard. I want to inspire kindness and understanding, and remind people that we don’t always have to do what is expected of us. Have fun, it’s fun!
