Fontaines D.C. - 'I Love You'
Fontaines D.C. are back with their ferocious new single 'I Love You', the second instalment from their new album 'Skinty Fia'.
Fontaines D.C have shared the next single from their upcoming album 'Skinty Fia', set for release later this year on Partisan Records. 'I Love You' is a passionate lament for Ireland that has been described by the band as "the first overtly political song we've written". Layered, impressionistic and unflinching in it's intensity. The track marries the frantic energy of the band's debut album 'Dogrel' with the dark undertones of their sophomore release 'A Hero's Death.
Veiled in the guise of a love song, the new track deals with the emotional and intellectual tug of war that arises from geographical displacement. Written from the perspective of an Irishman abroad, the single reveals the conflict experienced by the band, enjoying great personal success and a sense of cultural pride, while simultaneously metabolising deep disappointment and swirling anger, at the current political climate as well as the countries grimmest historical atrocities.
The band previously expressed their frustrations at the Irish political elite with 'Roy's Tune', a track taken from their debut album that dealt with the corporate exploitation of Ireland and the simultaneous struggle of the countries working classes. 'I Love You' undoubtedly features echoes of those younger voices however, the bands success and subsequent emigration from the country has shifted their perspective and brought questions of guilt, identity and appropriation into the equation. The emotional toll of this rumination is apparent throughout the track in Chatten's raw, pained delivery and the stirring accompanying instrumentation.
As the band try to define their collective identity outside of Dublin and untether themselves from the cities rich mythology, a new, more exciting voice is emerging. Sonically urgent and lyrically arresting, 'I Love You' is an exciting indication of what is to come from Fontaines D.C and what we can expect from 'Skinty Fia' which is scheduled for release on April 22nd.
