The Band Explains: Public Order - 'Fear'

Emerging Welsh trio Public Order are back! After their stunning breakthrough debut single ‘Feels Like Summer’ last year, which saw the track get featured on the FIFA 2022 soundtrack. They have returned to deliver their follow up single ‘Fear’.

While ‘Feels Like Summer’ saw them tap into the nostalgic aura surrounding the early Britpop sound, ‘Fear’ focuses on the more rave-inspired elements of the same era to deliver a knock-out punch of blistering beats and gritty guitars. They took a moment to talk to us about the impact of social media and the meaning behind the new track.

Hey there Public Order, how are you? So your track ‘Fear’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Hi guys, we're good! Buzzing for this tune to finally be out! Yeah of course, Fear I think for us was all about raising the question on how people’s social media followings affected your overall outlook of a person. Like it’s crazy that a number on a profile can change your behaviour around said person. It’s all about being wrapped up in that world, and sort of losing sight of reality really. Mad how a number defines you and your status. It’s like everyone’s ‘famous’ nowadays.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
Probably not the most exciting haha, we literally recorded all of it in one of the boy's bedrooms. From all the vocals to guitars etc. We usually write and record all our songs this way and then occasionally pop to the studio for a touch up at the end! I (David) showed Jac the instrumental for Fear when we were drunk one time and he sang the chorus idea as a joke. We both thought it was creasing haha. The next day we had a listen through the voice notes and just decided to pop it in for a laugh. Just seemed to stick then!

This track tackles the concept of social media - what are your views on the ‘influencer’ culture? Is TikTok taking over the music releasing process?
I think it’s like everything else really, like two sides of a coin. It both comes with a good side and a bad. Fear sort of tackles the dark obsessive side that comes with social media, like the changing of ego and how you can attach your self worth with your social media following. Yeah we think TikTok is definitely taking over the releasing process! It seems to have given everyone an even playing field with releasing music, in the light that any song can go viral on TikTok and really help the promotion of a song. We love it for all the breakdowns that people do of their music as well, and their walkthroughs and all that sort of thing!

There are some rave influences on this - do you like to go raving? Where are the best parties?
We love a good party haha! Some of our favourites are hosted in Cardiff, nights like delete and haŵs are just a couple! We also love a journey across the bridge to Bristol! Motion always put on a good event, even if it leaves us a bit worse for where the next day haha!

Your debut track ‘Feels Like Summer’ was featured on the FIFA 2022 soundtrack, how did that feel?
We were absolutely buzzing about it! We couldn’t of asked for a better way to kick things off. There’s so many sick artists on the soundtrack that we love, and its class we’re in amongst them!

Now this track is out there - what next for you?
We’ve been flat out writing and producing and have got loads of songs we want to release. We’ve also been putting together our live set and have got a few live shows lined up this summer! We’re super happy where we’re at the moment, and excited for what’s to come!
