Charlie Hickey - 'Nervous At Night'
Charlie Hickey has released the title track of his upcoming LP (due for release on May 20), ‘Nervous at Night’, a glittering pop-ballad with guts.
‘Nervous at Night’ finds Charlie Hickey parsing the anxieties of unrequited love. “It feels like you’ve died / if I don’t see you tonight” he sings over a synth-y, guitar-driven melody. The teenage intensity of this proclamation is an inherent part of Hickey’s charm – he’s singing what the rest of us are too embarrassed to admit.
A pervasive sense of anxiety – which Hickey now understands to be obsessive-compulsive disorder – is a prominent theme on the track as well as the songwriter’s forthcoming LP, Nervous at Night. “It captures a lot of the anxiety and beauty that comes with growing up and having new feelings,” Hickey explains. “It's a song about being nervous for no particular reason, which is a running theme on this album, and also one that I think a lot of people, particularly of my generation, can relate to.”
Hickey will take ‘Nervous at Night’ on tour with him in the UK this May. With his nostalgia-tinged beats and insightful lyrics, it’s guaranteed to be a good night.
