Inspired #363 - Kirsty Grant
London-based pop artist Kirsty Grant returns with a soft, ballad-driven delivery in the form of "Quick Fix". An insight into her powerful song writing abilities and teamed with a mellow pop backdrop, the track is a rising pop single written about the often scary but necessary healing process post-relationship.
Unafraid to pour her heart into her music, "Quick Fix" elevates Kirsty's pristine vocals whilst the featherweight instrumentation carries the emotional weighting with ease. Contrasting light melodies with heavier themes, the single offers comfort in its plush piano notes and shimmering elegance. A slight detour from her usual upbeat releases, "Quick Fix" reinforces Kirsty's flexibility as an artist and songwriter, and reminds us that sometimes the best doses of happiness come from calming tones and inner-healing.
"It's about the realisation that healing your own wounds and bitterness really does take time. There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution to mending your past insecurities and relationship problems,"explains Kirsty. "Sometimes you are stuck in a crippling decision of whether the pain, and ups and downs, are worth it or not, or whether with time it can heal and be stronger than ever before."
She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.
Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
My top three musical inspirations at the moment are Julia Michaels, Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande. Julia Michaels is one of my biggest inspirations, and has been for a couple of years now. I started to look into her songwriting and realised that she has written practically every song that I have ever loved. She is one of the best songwriters I have ever come across, and she makes me want to work harder and improve my writing. Dua Lipa inspires me as her sound is so solidified and identifiable. She has worked so hard creating this cohesive sound and image, and every track on “Future Nostalgia” inspires me, due to the insane songwriting, melodies and quality of sound. Ariana Grande has been my biggest singing inspiration since 2013. Her talent it unmatched, and she pushes me to want to become a better singer every day. Watching her behind the scene clips of her creating harmony stacks and arrangements in the studio, inspires me like nothing else.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
There are countless films that have inspired me at one point or another. But the most recent film that I watched which really had an impact on me and gave me motivation, is “Tick Tick Boom”. I recommend it to everyone I meet; it really shows the true behind the scenes struggle that is trying to make it in music, whatever genre, and continuing to believe in yourself when nobody else does.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
I truly find London the most inspiring city that I have been to. The music scene is incredible and there is so much going on that it’s hard to be bored here. People from all over the world come to London to live, so it’s filled with so much diversity.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
It’s so hard to pin point who the most inspiring person to me is. There are countless people that I am inspired by in completely different ways. If I really had to pick one, I would say Ariana Grande. I have followed her career since her first single release, and she was someone that made me take music seriously and decide to move to London to try and purse my goals. When I was a teenager, I would come home after school and practise singing every night because of Ariana. If I had to pick who inspires me the most, un-music related, I would have to say my mum, she’s one tough cookie in the best way.
What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
The inspiration for “Quick Fix” came to me very easily. It is all about accepting your flaws and owning them, trying your best to hold yourself accountable for your mistakes, and learning from them in the process. When you feel like relationships are breaking apart, you can decide to work out the problems and work through them together, or accept that you can’t continue in the relationship anymore. There is no “one size fits all” solution, and healing old wounds take time.
How would you like to inspire people?
I really hope to inspire people with my music and writing. I hope that people can relate to my lyrics and feel connected to my songs, and if they have a passion for music, I would aspire to influence them to write their own music. If I could make at least one person feel the way that I feel listening to my idols music and feeling inspired by them like I do, I would be happy.
