Introducing #218 - The Hilder

Yorkshire indie-rockers The Hilder return with their brand new single ‘Call It What You Want’. We caught up with them to find out more about the track, and themselves.

Having dropped their debut single ‘Lost On You’ in 2021 before showcasing their second single ‘Give It Time’ towards the back end of the same year, The Hilder established themselves as a band to keep an eye on. Their latest single, ‘Call It What You Want’ however, feels like a big step forward for the band.

Harbouring the same energy and drive as those crucial first two singles whilst building on their tried and tested indie-pop formula through the inclusion of synths. Three minutes of upbeat and optimistic indie-pop, with enough bite to keep it from being sugary, ‘Call It What You Want’ is described by the band as “touching on the struggles of a modern-day relationship and the repetitive cycle that you can find yourself in, both in society and on a personal level. In a time of social media and mobile phones you will see it far too often and naturally the inspiration for ‘Call It What You Want’ was drawn from this.”

Hey there guys - how are you? So your new single is out now, how does it feel to finally have it out there in the world?

It feels great, we love releasing new songs and the anticipation when you've been sat on a song for a couple of months before release it also comes with some nerves. We put a lot of work and love into our music and with that you just hope that they are well received, for sure the main thing is that we like them but in order to do what we love other people need to like them too. For us to push as far forward as we can and keep the dream alive.

It is called ‘Call It What You Want' - what is the meaning behind that, what's the track about?

The song is about a marriage gone south told from first and third persons point of view.  It starts with acknowledging the inevitability of a reoccurring cycle brought on by his own suspicions to only have them exacerbated by people coming forward with "whispers" only confirming the initial suspicions to be true skip to the chorus this is when the "feud" starts where all is laid bare and to finally let her know how he really feels the outro is the final hammer blow the jig is up

You are based in Yorkshire - what are your favorite things to do there? Where do you go for adventures?

Yeah we are from Yorkshire. Honestly there isn’t a lot of stuff to do here as much as you may think anyway. Other than the odd city and countryside you have to make your own fun in the area that we live. This is why we are all so committed to being in a band because it keeps us entertained and gives us a purpose in the town that we live in

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?

Our influences include the likes of Blossoms, Johnny Marr, Catifsh etc but we do feel like we don’t particularly sound like any other band. We always try to figure out who else our sound sounds like but it’s difficult to put a label on it. We are very much in to a lot of different styles of music but we’d like to think that we do have our own unique sound to a certain extent.

Now that Call It What You Want is out there - what next for you? We are back in the studio in a couple of weeks working on the 4th single and we have a run of gigs coming up starting with our home town show at Bridlington spa in the 13th May
