Inspired #364 - Kubrick

New alternative artist Kubrick has just released his new single ‘Waved’.

'Waved' is Kubrick's metalcore single, his nod to and acknowledgement of his previous career in Shields. The track was initially intended to be a transitional single for Shields, revealing Kubrick as the band's new frontman; however the band disbanded before the song was ever released.

Now, several years on, the song has received a new lease of life - all guitars and vocals re-recorded and with a new mix by George Lever. Kubrick will be playing his debut live show at London's Underworld on 23rd April with TheCityIsOurs.

He took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind his music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
In no particular order…
Joshua Travis, his skills and creativity on guitar are unmatched in my opinion. Any project he starts or his a part of usually has my attention.
Lorn, They are my number 1 favourite electronic artist without a doubt. All of their songs are packed with emotion and even the instrumental songs tell a story.
Phil Bozeman. The KING of metal vocals. I have nothing else to add.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
Under the Skin.
The movie follows this woman who seduces, traps and captures men in this alternate dimension. She also goes on her own journey of self discovery throughout the story, I don’t want to give away too much…
The whole aesthetic and vibe is really unsettling and cold and had me captivated even when I could barely understand the motives and reasoning behind the events that took place through the film.
I guess the way the movie made me feel so much by explaining so little inspired my own creativity when writing music.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Lake Oswego, Oregon
It feels like more of a suburb town then a city, it’s quiet, simple and I guess technically kinda boring… but when I’ve been there before I’ve always felt at home and it’s been easy to feel creative when I’ve spent time there.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
My mother. She took no shit, but gave no shit unless it came here way. She also had such a deep capacity for love and cared about everyone else far more than herself.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
“Waved” was about a toxic relationship I used to be in with a an over dramatic and mean person who prioritised getting drunk and high over everything else.

How would you like to inspire people?
If anything I release musically inspires someone to get music involved in their life I would love that. Music has always been there for me and at one stage of my life was THE reason I got out of bed everyday.
