Easy Life - 'BEESWAX'

It’s anything but an Easy Life in the portrait painted by new single ‘BEESWAX’.

The Leicester born five-piece have been building momentum following their 2021 album ‘life’s a beach’ and are back with a refreshed sound on their latest release.

Featuring a rather more pointed subject matter than what is expected from the band, this track is littered with harsh truths based in the collective past years the world has had. Frontman Murray Matravers has been open with his own mental health struggles in his lyricism before now, but the single reflects the zeitgeist’s own struggles – with anxiety being rife amongst society. ‘BEESWAX’ sees Matravers spitting about the invasive nosy nature of a post-lockdown universe– a far step from their usual love-laced topics. Lyrics “think you better relax // it’s none of your business // you should mind your beeswax” are an angry evaluation of the state oversharing has left the world in; this feeling is heightened through irreverent delivery.

Hypnotic repeating melodies are the backbone to the song, capturing an almost daunting mood due to the heavy-handed use of distortion throughout. The track is reminiscent of melodic hip hop which can usually be said for their lyric delivery but not their sound. The production is more experimental than their previous work - potentially hinting at what’s to come for the band.

Overall, an interesting step forward for a band known for their laissez faire tendencies and softer sound. If Easy Life are about to break from the snuggly fitting niche they’ve created for themselves they are certainly going in an interesting direction. This single is a decidedly positive move for the group. Progression of sound is always an asset to the artist (even when controversial amongst fans) because growth tends to go hand in hand with passion – and music isn’t prone to resonate without the latter.
