Track By Track: Peri Rae - 'Handing You My Heart EP'

Rising singer-songwriter Peri Rae has just released new EP ‘Handing You My Heart’.

A dreamy collection of warm folk-pop, the gentle soundscapes of Handing You My Heart melt together in Peri’s signature style, while maintaining heart-wrenchingly honest songwriting at its core. Ensuring personal experience remains at the forefront of her music, Peri’s poetic lyricism artfully deconstructs the complexities of self-discovery, sexuality and coming of age.

One of BBC Introducing’s ‘One to Watch’ 22-year-old Peri has already ticked off many of the industry must do’s, securing coveted features on Spotify’s ‘New Music Friday UK’ and ‘Our Generation’, an invite to perform at Soho House later this summer and a forthcoming feature on award-winning podcast The Guilty Feminist

She took a moment to talk to us about the EP - track by track.

Fair Enough
It took me about 10 minutes to write this song from start to finish the morning after a bad date. There was a customer that would come into the cafe I worked at, and he seemed so perfect so I asked him on a date and was so disappointed, because all he would say to the things I told him was “fair enough”. This song is about falling in love with the idea of people and how we deserve the greatest love in the world.

In Between
In Between is a queer-anthem designed to empower anyone that’s feeling uncertain of where they’re at in life. It’s about my experiences with biphobia. I wrote this song to lift me up when the world was making me feel so ashamed of my sexuality. I wanted to turn all that hate into love and celebration, and that’s exactly what In Between does.

Wildflower
I wrote Wildflower when I was 17 and fell in love for the first time and felt like my whole world had transformed overnight. This song captures those bursting feelings of young love and the promise of possibility.

The High Life
This was a lockdown song, I'd just started out as a musician and was suddenly locked inside and my life felt so empty and it felt like the city just didn't want me. It's about the pressure on people, and artists to live in London, and how truly hard that is.

Little Steps
I wrote Little Steps after experiencing my first anxiety attack. It was during lockdown and I just felt like I was so lost and couldn’t breathe. The next morning I woke up and this song was written within 5 minutes. It now acts as a mantra to keep me calm and means so much to me, I hope you resonate with it too.
