Introducing #216 - Lois

Let us introduce you to rising alt-pop singer Lois - who has just released the video for her debut single ‘The Way You Are’.

Based in Leeds, Lois crafts soulful alternative pop with an intelligent edge, building on real life experiences to craft something entirely unique and resonant, drawing influence from late-R&B and soul.

'The Way You Are' is the first statement of intent, and sets the tone for what's to come later in the year. A single that instantly draws you in, it offers instant insight into her world. Combining a soulful backbeat with cathartic lyrical work, it shows both where Lois has come from, and what the future holds.

She took a moment to talk to us about her music

Hey there Lois - how are you? So your debut single is out now, how does it feel to finally have it out there in the world?
I feel unreal. I’m so glad it’s out and people can finally have a taste of my music. It’s such an exciting place to be, I think there’s just so much possibility for what’s to come, it feels really great.

It is called ‘The Way You Are’ - what is the meaning behind that?
I think it’s just the most simplified way of saying, everything about you, I just love so much, the way you are, everything that makes you, you, good or bad I’m here for all of it.

You are based in Leeds - what are your favorite things to do there? Where do you go for adventures?
I love to go to gigs here! The atmosphere and community here in Leeds is so warm and accepting and inspiring and you get to meet so many new people. I can’t say I go on too many adventures in Leeds unless you’d call making your way through Hyde park when the temperature has gone above 10°….ahah

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
Relationships, interactions with people and of course the music I listen to. I love to tell stories too, often about situations in my life I guess that’s probably the most influential part of my music.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you music before?
I’d say I’ve got a mixture of influences but I think I’d base my sound around feelings rather than genre, I’m not sure if that’s the right answer but I’d say it’s music that makes you feel. Alt poppy soulful jazz inspired music.

Now the debut track is out there - what next for you?
I’ve got some gigs coming up with one on my 21st Birthday at the great escape festival in Brighton! I’ve got some more releases in the pipeline too, can't wait for you to hear them!
