In Conversation With #187 - Charlie Collins

Sydney’s Charlie Collins has just shared her anticipated new album Undone, out now via Island Records.

With 5 million artist streams to her name, Charlie Collins has successfully been building her solo career in her native Australia since 2018. Her ARIA nominated and AIR award winning debut Snowpine won numerous accolades, crossed music genres and saw her perform support slots for Sam Fender, Orville Peck and Gang of Youths with festival appearances at Australia’s Laneway, Fairgrounds and Woodford Festival.

Undone arrives upon Charlie’s return to Sydney after an elongated stay in London, during which she took to the road in support of close friends Gang Of Youths, including a sold out show at London’s Brixton Academy.

She took a moment to talk to us about how the album came together.

Hey there Charlie, how are you? So your new album is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Hi! It honestly feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. To hold something so personal and close to your heart for so long and then letting go out into the world is a beautiful feeling.

It is called ‘Undone’ - what is the meaning behind that?
The title just seemed to fit the whole theme of the record. It’s all about letting go and exposing the truths behind the pain.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
I recorded half the record at The Grove. I love that studio so much! As far as stories go, I guess I just more enjoyed being away somewhere secluded creating music with my friends and making magic happen. There were alot of family cook ups, drinking, thinking and playing music! (So rock and roll… haha)

What are the key themes and influences on the album?
I didn’t really go into this record with any influences in mind. I just wanted the songs to serve themselves without any pre thought of how it should sound. I guess the key theme is pretty much just heartbreak.

If the album could be a soundtrack to any film - which one and why?
Ohhhh I would say eternal sunshine of a spotless mind. Purely because that’s just one of my favourite films and I reckon my sad songs would fit pretty well with the movie.

Do you have a favorite lyric on the album? If so, which one and why?
“When did honesty become such a sin” I don’t know why but this lyric in skyline always sticks out to me. Sometimes speaking your mind can get twisted into ways that you never meant them to. I’m always super honest in my songs but sometimes that can offend people. Woops.

Now the album is out there - what next for you?
Album number 3 baby!
