Inspired #372 - the artist ren

California based sixteen year old the artist ren has just released her latest track ‘Not the Clones’. Blending together a mixture of the delicate vocals of Phoebe Bridges with a dash of Haim fun energy. She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
In no particular order, I’m inspired by CHVRCHES (Lauren Mayberry), Bastille (Dan Smith) and Purity Ring (Megan James).

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
No one film in particular, but sometimes while I’m watching films or TV, I get inspired to write a song. It’s that inspiration that sticks, but not necessarily the film itself.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
If I write about places, it’s usually someplace I’ve invented in my brain. I create fantasy locations as the settings for my songs. I’m only 16, so I’m looking forward to travelling and finding inspiration in the cities I visit, but for now I have to rely on my imagination

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
It’s not really a person, per se, but my cat is one of my greatest musical inspirations… probably half of the songs I write involve her in some way. There’s even a song on my forthcoming e.p. where’s she’s the main subject of the song.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
My inspiration for this track was an episode from the anime “The Disastrous Life of Saiki K”. In the episode, he reveals the fact that he can clone himself, and each clone was more and more different than the original, and I wondered whether he thought one of the clones may actually be better than himself.

How would you like to inspire people?
I’d like to show people my age that they can write amazing music. People at school come up to me and tell me that they’d like to write music as well, and I’m happy I can inspire them to do that.
