Joni – 'Things I Left Behind'
London-based singer-songwriter Joni has unveiled her latest venture into raw indie-rock, and in the same breath, stamps herself as a steady artist-to-watch for the upcoming year.
Jilting the disillusion of Los Angeles to seek new inspirations in London, only to be met with unforeseen anguish in the end of a long-term relationship (“pain is the price you pay for loving someone”), Joni uses her new project as an outlet of heartbreak abrupt loss. Joni’s latest release is the title track of her upcoming debut studio record ‘Things I Left Behind’, and joins 2024’s ‘Avalanches’ as a secondary peek of her deeply personal project.
Sitting on the philtrum of the ethereal nature of Clairo and the often-haunting soundscapes of Aqualung, “Things I Left Behind” is a breath of fresh air and presents Joni’s newest project in a neatly wrapped indie-pop package. With a performance not too far-removed from crooned stylings of Beabadoobee, she laments on isolation and the futility of time (“Think we got forever but it’s not enough”).
Drenched in lush vocal intonations, jangly guitars and soothing percussive beats, Joni crafts a soundscape that paints an abstraction tinged with melancholy and takes her woe in her stride. At just over the three-minute mark, “Things I Left Behind” is a delightful glimpse into what Joni’s upcoming record holds.
