Slim Wrist - 'The Soft'
Edinburgh duo Slim Wrist are back with another simplistic pocket of pop perfection with their first single, ‘The Soft’, from their upcoming album, Closer For Comforting (due September 2022). The twosome (FKA Super Inuit) are made of Fern Morris and Brian Pokora, who have a penchant for turning heads with their pop sensibilities.
The single is fragmented into a dreamy trip, with vocalist’s Morris’ incessant choral mantra “simmer down” lingering along the track. It starts with an expressive, wavering synth that makes the listening experience similar to that or transcendental meditation. The whole song is creatively put together, with the vocals and instrumentation blending together with a lyrical reputation. ‘The Soft’ is best experienced with a good pair of headphones.
The single can easily be compared to the likes of Cocteau Twins, Sylvan Esso, and Portishead. They present a refinement of the shoe gaze genre with swirling vocals, a layered wash of distorted, bent to where no instrument is distinguishable from another.
It is certainly a poignant pop track, it’s philosophical and emotional intelligence palatable throughout. It’s ambience reaching beyond the end of the song, into further song choices for audience, leaving them chasing introspective high.
