Inspired #380 - Daimy Lotus

Rotterdam-based singer and songwriter Daimy Lotus unveils her new cut "Pathetic" via Amsterdam-based independent record label New Ams.

Taking inspiration from the pop-punk scene to create a backdrop of crashing guitars and electrified riffs, "Pathetic" hits back at the insufferable millennial male dating trope - the fuckboy. A powerful pop-rock single filtered with grungy hues, "Pathetic" hopes to be an anthem for all those who have been affected by manipulative behaviours. Criticising their actions towards potential suitors, the alternative pop single demands to put a stop to the toxicity that is rife in modern dating with an assertive statement of resilience.

She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
I’m inspired by so many artists but lately, especially regarding my own project, I’m feeling really inspired by Leah Kate and Yungblud. I’m loving the anti-fuckboy vibes Leah is giving in a clever punk-pop style and I love Yungblud for his strong lyrics and his message: being a home for everyone who feels like they don’t belong anywhere. I strongly connect with that cause that’s something I want to do with my music too. I want people to feel seen and heard. Big fan of Fletcher and Lil Nas X too, and what they mean for their communities.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I used to watch movies a lot but not so much lately. I’m more of a ’series-binge-watch’ type of person lately, I guess. But if I have to pick one, I’d say Soul. That movie has so many layers and I love the message I get from it, which is not having to accomplish or prove anything in life to enjoy life. You are enough and everything you need is already here. Life can be tough sometimes so especially then it’s really freeing to go inward and realize this.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
I think every place has its own charm and beauty but I really love the energy I’m feeling when I’m in London. The overall kindness of the people, multi-cultural society, the structure, how everyone is focussed on their own grind. I love that. I thrive when I’m there.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
That’s a tough one because I feel inspired by so many people. I don’t think I can choose one. I like to surround myself with people that inspire me and motivate me, so basically all the people close to me. And of course, other artists, writers, musicians, dancers but also for example chefs like Massimo Bottura.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I kinda had this aggressive and disgusted feeling coming up while hearing the chords Bas was playing, so I knew I had to tap into that and the fuckboy-theme is what came out of it. The fact that I couldn’t link it to one specific person is because I’ve had many messed-up experiences where guys would just walk all over me, pushing my limits to get what they want and never even consider once what I wanted.

How would you like to inspire people?
I would like to inspire people to be open, vulnerable, really listen, to become aware of themselves and most importantly to be their authentic self, without any shame. I want to build a community where people feel seen and heard. A lot of people look surprised when I tell them I’ve been bullied for most part of my life. Well, I have, so I know what it’s like to not fit in, to not belong anywhere, to not be seen and heard. That’s why it’s my mission to do that for the people who listen to my music.
