Band Of The Week #207 - Spyres
This week’s Band of the Week is Spyres - who have just released their debut EP ‘Dear Diary’ via Lab Records.
Featuring the earlier singles “See Through You” and “Honestly”, debut EP “Dear Diary” is an emotion-fuelled time capsule that charts the thoughts and feelings of the four members since their formation. Recorded by co-producers double Platinum certified producer Christopher Marshall (Gerry Cinnamon, Declan Welsh & The Decadent West, Dead Pony) and Johnny Madden ( of Baby Strange), this record sees Spyres step into their own.
They took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.
Hey there Spyres - how are you? So your debut EP is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Hey! We’re all good. We’re so happy ‘Dear Diary’ is out now for everyone to listen to. We feel like it’s been a long time coming to release a full body of work and we’re so proud of the result. Feels like all our hard work has paid off!
It is called ‘Dear Diary’ - what is the meaning behind that?
‘Dear Diary’ is almost like a memory box of the past few years for us. As we head in to our 20’s, we’ve wrote songs we think a lot of people round about our age could relate to with themes of friendships to love and the feelings we may not want to express but instead write down in our diaries.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
We recorded the EP in ‘Castle of Doom’ with Chris Marshall and Johnny Madden. We had such a great time recording these songs especially because we had such a clear vision of how we wanted everything to sound and emotions we wanted to convey so the process was very smooth and easy for us.
In a couple of the songs we experimented a bit with some synths which was a cool addition. We played around with some melodies on a Moog that actually ended up in one of the tracks ‘Test’ which originally wasn’t a part of the song but totally impacted it in the best way!
What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
The EP is definitely a coming of age with themes of teenage angst, hardships and all the crazy thoughts a ‘20 something’ can probably relate to. We felt really inspired by one of our new favourite artists ‘Dora Jar’. Her EP ‘Digital Meadow’ was a big influence on us and her storytelling and impactful choruses really helped us bring our stories to life.
If the EP could be the soundtrack to any film - which one would it be and why?
I think ‘Dear Diary’ could be the perfect fit for a lot of coming of age films that were released in the early 2000’s especially. For example ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ and ‘Juno’. In both of these films we see powerful female leads experiencing life in such a chaotic world while learning a lot about their relationships and themselves most importantly.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP - if so, which one and why?
I think my favourite lyric would have to be “Fries before guys, was it all lies?” This is in the second verse of Lost Without You. I remember when we were writing it, we were trying to think of those cringey sayings you would say to your friends or see on the front of a t-shirt when you were younger and we felt this was quite a funny wee play on words to add to the song while still fitting in with the theme of the song.
Now the EP is out there - what next?
We can’t wait to play the new songs live at our upcoming gigs. We’re also off on tour around the UK in October as well as a few other gigs round about too! We just want to keep writing more as well and get back into the studio again before the end of the year.
