Inspired #381 - ENOLA
Melbourne-based singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist ENOLA - has just released their new single ‘Strange Comfort’.
Taking cues from the no-wave sounds of Joy Division and Suicide’s Alan Vega, the post-punk of IDLES and Fontaines D.C. underpinned by a background in electronic music production, ENOLA infuses hard hitting tracks with a stinging vulnerability, applying the salve to the self-inflicted wound.
‘Strange Comfort’ is bursting with punk vitality, driven by fuzzy guitars and brusque vocals, motioning forward along a knife’s edge. Centered around the resounding line, “there’s a strange comfort in us all going through the same,” it evokes an urgency of time running out.
They took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind their music.
Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
I am inspired by many artists, though 3 that seem most prominent would be:
1) Patti Smith
2) Kurt Cobain
3) Ian Curtis
I would say I am drawn to each for different reasons.
I love Patti's lyricism, poetry & fearceness on stage, such a huge presence.
I love Kurts Rawness and vulnerability, never afraid to breathe emotion nor stay true to who he is.
As for Ian/Joy Division, I love the sparseness and atmospheric elements within their music and writing. There is a real torment to Ian obviously, that has always been something I have drawn to.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
Whilst again there isn't one particular film, i've always been drawn to things that are quite dark and heavy. For instance, I really love: Requiem for a dream, Girl Interrupted, Kids, Fight Club, Magnolia etc. Kinda the same reason I am drawn to those musicians. There is a truth and sense of humanity that seems real and not fabricated throughout them.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
I've lived in a few cities at different times throughout my life in Australia, though I would say the city that inspires me most would be Naarm/Melbourne.
I would say this is because Naarm/Melbourne is where my own art really came to life. Being surrounded by great music and creatives really bolstered my own confidence to begin this journey.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
I would say the people closest to me are the ones that inspire me the most, although I am obviously inspired by many others too, these people are my day to day inspiration.
What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
So when I wrote the track, it came from a visual place and was very much based on imagery that surrounded a time in my life and situations I went through when I was younger (a teenager).
How would you like to inspire people?
Haha, hard one to answer without sounding cheesy. I guess speaking creatively I would want people to endure, and push on. Continuing to create is very important; praise or no praise, I feel like the urge to continue creating regardless of applause is so important. Don't let yourself get disheartened by what others think, because in the end who cares, it's for you.
