Introducing #237 - Edie Bens
Let us introduce you to twenty-one year old rising Welsh singer-songwriter Edie Bens - who has just released her track ‘Had You Never Gone Away’.
She discovered one boozy night, a treasure trove of poetry by her drummer’s dad about his late mother, which inspired her first stunning release on Glassnote Records ‘Had You Never Gone Away’. A vivid storyteller inspired by the great stars of Country music, Edie has an undeniable talent for classic songwriting with candid charm when taking delicate stories from her travels with her band. Mixed by Lee Smith (Holly Humberstone, Dylan) the poignant, yet melodic track arrives alongside its official video which sees Edie in her natural environment in a stripped-back honest portrayal of the song and is a sublime introduction into Edie’s upcoming body of work.
Edie took a moment to talk to us about her music.
Hey there Edie - how are you? So your track ‘Had You Gone Away’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Hey! I’m so good thank you! Hope you are too?!? I’ve been thinking a lot today about how zero gravity might feel. Which lead me to find out that It takes 6 pounds of salt to a gallon of water in my bath tub to float on the surface. So I’m thinking that’s as close as I’m going to get.
The song was inspired by a poem my friends dad read me when we were playing in Manchester.
He wasn’t the kind of guy you’d maybe picture when you think of a poet but his words were heartbreakingly beautiful and I was so moved I promised to write a song about it.
Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
I’m from a small village in South Wales. I love going back for a pint in our local pub, a good curry and a swim off the rocks at high tide. But not in that order haha!
What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
Dolly Parton, Springsteen and Tom Jones.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Sleepy rock music you can occasionally dance to.
Now the track is out there - what next for you?
World domination. Only joking I’m releasing a lot of music over the coming year that I’m super proud of with a team I adore. So I’m gonna just keep swimming until something sticks.
