Introducing #236 - GRL BUNNY
Let us introduce you to GRL BUNNY - who has just released her silky single ‘To The Grave’.
After securing her place in the industry writing for artists including FLO, AWA, Erin Bloomer and more GRL BUNNY is finally ready to step into the spotlight herself with her own music. Simple 00’s inspired R&B backbeats and delicate keys lay the perfect foundation for GRL BUNNY’s heart-warming and honest lyrics. Gliding over the track the newcomer sings “I promise that your secret is safe, I’ll lock it up and throw the keys away” as she paints the story of ride or die friendship. Written in the midst of the pandemic and self-recorded in her bedroom, unlike the typical romantic love narratives we’re used to hearing “To The Grave” is an ode to BUNNY’s best girlfriends, friends that she wanted to honour through her song writing.
She took a moment to talk to us about her music.
Hey there GRL BUNNY - how are you? So your track ‘To The Grave’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Hi! I’m great thanks! ‘To the Grave’ is a love letter to my best friends. I have the most incredible ride or die female friendships in my life, and this song is a celebration of that, and how we’d all take each other's secrets to the grave.
Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
I’m originally from Reading but I've lived in South London for over a decade and I feel like that’s home now. Here in Peckham you’re always surrounded by amazing food, music, art and fashion. Some of my favourite spots are Peckham Levels and the Bussey Building - there’s always something going on at both, whether it’s live music, a rooftop film screening or an art installation.
What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
I draw a lot of influence from 90s/00s R&B - artists like Aaliyah, Janet Jackson and TLC and think that’s probably at the centre of the music I make. I love to reference Kanye when it comes to production and get super inspired by the details and arrangement in his music. And artistically I’m hugely influenced by Madonna and her ability to evolve, set trends and break barriers, which is something I try to channel through my own artistry.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Sweet vocals layered over dark production, with clever lyrics and catchy melodies. I’m gonna get you in your feelings but I’ll have you dancing too. Put me in your playlist next to Chloe & Halle and SZA.
Now the track is out there - what next for you?
I’ve got lots of new music lined up already, and I’m always writing non stop, so really just continuing to create stuff I love and putting it out there. Also going to have some live shows coming up soon!
