Drugdealer - 'Somebody to Love'
At last, Drugdealer are back and giving listeners something new to sink their teeth into with their newest funky single ‘Somebody to Love’.
Los Angeles’ own, self proclaimed ‘experimental’ band Drugdealer return to their roots with this latest track off their new record Hiding in Plain Sight set to release October 28th.
Melodically, the song sounds reminiscent of those great, ‘California Summer’ bands from the 1970’s like The Doobie Brothers or Steely Dan, with a wonderfully dirty bass tone and relaxed horn arrangement. The track still manages to sound incredibly fresh and different while paying homage to Drugdealer’s own musical influences, conjuring up images of the track being performed on something like The Old Grey Whistle Test.
The band are notorious for working with other artists, with their most notable tracks featuring the alluring Weyes Blood, with whom they have collaborated with multiple times, and Jackson MacIntosh. This track however, feels intimate - lyrically expressing feelings of yearning and want - over the top of a laid back drum beat and groovy bassline. Drugdealer’s lyricism has always been complex and thought-provoking, while still feeling informal and playful, and this track does not disappoint.
If you want to feel like you’re cruising along the LA strip, with the windows down and the warm breeze in your hair, this track is perfect. ‘Somebody to Love’ along with their previously released single ‘Madison’, the first musical endeavour written after the release of their previous album ‘Raw Honey’, has given high hopes for their upcoming album. Featuring collaborations with American folk artist Kate Bollinger, and punk poet Tim Presley, Drugdealer has us itching for their new record to drop October 28th, with hopes of it being just as dreamy and funky as this nostalgic track.
