Bonnie Kemplay – ‘Static’

Rising indie artist Bonnie Kemplay teases her upcoming debut EP, ‘running out of things to say, running out of things to do’, with the release of her vulnerable new alt-pop single ‘Static’.

Despite only making her musical debut in 2019, Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Bonnie Kemplay has quickly made a name for herself in the bedroom pop scene. With over 1 million collective streams, the 20-year-old’s authentic lyricism and ethereal vocals have been widely recognised, and resulted in her being named as the UK’s top emerging artist in Radio 1’s Live Lounge, where she has joined artists such as Miley Cyrus and Stormzy in making Live Lounge history. Recently, Bonnie has been playing a number of live shows, including opening for Bleachers at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, and supporting Adele for her BST Hyde Park shows in the early summer.

‘Static’, is Bonnie’s latest release, and has been named as CLASH’s Track Of The Day. The new single centres around an arm injury that the former Jazz Guitar student acquired, which resulted in her being unable to play guitar, and consequently stuck in a state of emotional turmoil. On the meaning behind the track, Bonnie describes: “Static is about my experience with a repetitive strain injury in my arms which put me out of playing guitar for 18 months. At the time I felt hopeless and uncertain of when or if I'd recover.” Co-produced by Joseph Rodgers and Toby Ollis-Brownstone, the track is characterised by a tangible sense of hopelessness and loss, as the Dirty Hit signee writes: My life feels so static, I’m pulling elastic and drawing circles on my floor’.

‘Static’ follows singles ‘19’ and ‘Was It Obvious’, making it the latest release from Bonnie’s upcoming EP titled ‘running out of things to say, running out of things to do’, which is due to be released later this year. The record consists of 6 tracks which were created over 3 formative years for the young artist. With each song reflecting on a different personal experience, the new EP showcases the diary-like songwriting which has allowed Bonnie’s music to be universally relatable, and gained her widespread recognition from platforms including Dork, Notion, DIY, and more.

Bonnie’s forthcoming EP, ‘running out of things to say, running out of things to do’, is set to be released on November 14th.
