EP Review: LINN - 'Femte Dimension'

Danish DIY artist LINN has returned for more musical shenanigans with the release of her new EP ‘Femte Dimension’ marking the start of a new era.

Her sound is surreal, alluring and captivating and her EP consists of five songs that all have their very own signature, and multidimensional soundscapes. She’s an intricate musician, keeps her songs close to their core, and brings to life a portrait of dynamic and playful contemporary popscapes. LINN’s got an enticing voice that lures us into the journey that is ‘Femte Dimension’. The EP’s opener is a youthful and shimmering lullaby that makes us want to fight off sleep. ‘Okay, Sister’ was released as a single and comes with a video that was shot late at night on a small uninhabited island in southern Europe. The video was filmed on an old digital camera by LINN’s 4 year old daughter.

On her new EP she balances the mesmerising and melodic with the skew and experimental, testing the waters of her musical abilities. Her sound, and especially that of ‘Worth It’ is rather theatrical, could be the soundtrack of the scene in a thriller during which its characters are scoping out a building, finding beautiful and thrilling scenes we are unsure we want to uncover. She combines elements of bedroom pop, futuristic R&B and lo-fi indie sounds, and ties together an unapologetic piece of art that is undeniably LINN. ‘Happiness Is Real’ starts off a sweet ballad, alternating with pungent and surprising hooks that shook me awake, demanded my attention. Those hooks are a bit like the unexpected chocolate chips in a cupcake, they take you by surprise but once you know they’re there you keen to chew on more!

The EP closes with title track ‘Femte Dimension’, a softer and less frantic alternative pop sound that soothes and comforts and is the sound we’d imagined from a songwriter that wrote her EP with her then newborn child on her lap. In May 2021, LINN and Blood Child went on a Danish tour where she played her new material publicly for the first time, after that she went on and supported Wolf Alice, played SPOT Festival, Roskilde Festival and received a 5-star review in Danish publication Undertoner. With the release of ‘Femte Dimension’ we expect more grand gestures, festivals and support slots!
