Sick Joy - 'Painkiller'

Sick Joy’s latest track ‘Painkiller’ embraces being vulnerably open about the emotions you are experiencing, while also reminding us that the reasons for feeling the way that we do is valid and that perhaps we should redirect the frustration we often have towards ourself towards the cause of our emotions instead.

2022 proved to be an incredible year for Sick Joy; July 8th saw them release their debut album as well as supporting Pearl Jam at Hyde Park, London on the 8th and on the 9th of July they played at 2000 Trees festival, and August saw them at Reading and Leeds Festival. It looks like 2023 is gearing up to be the same for them, perhaps even bigger and better than last year, the 19th of January saw them release their latest single ‘Painkiller,’ which was produced by Dom Craik of Nothing But Thieves.

Mykl explained that the track ‘Painkiller’ is “a song about turning the anger, that’s normally directed at myself, when I fall into old habits and behaviours, back out to the reasons and life experiences that sewed them into my life.” He added that “I can see this survival method is flawed, but I don’t hate myself, I just hate you”. It’s something that a lot of Sick Joy’s fans may be able to relate to, and it reinforces the idea that you are not alone in this.

‘Painkiller’ embraces the vulnerability of being open about the way that you are feeling at any particular moment of your life, along with the ways in which you are dealing with your emotions. The track reflects on what it is to be a human being, and how that often means we also experience the difficulties of what it means to be a person, along with how we find ourselves overcoming things we never thought ourselves strong enough to do.

Sick Joy released their newest song ‘Painkiller’ ahead of their tour that kicks off on the 30th of January in Chelmsford, before finally concluding on the 5th of February in Wolverhampton. The tour celebrates the 10th anniversary of Independent Venue Week, and the full list of tour dates can be found over on Sick Joy’s website. January already promises to be an excellent year for Sick Joy, and after the year thy had last year it's very exciting to see what comes next for this band.
