The Lathums - 'Struggle'
Following up fan-favourite ‘Say my Name’, The Lathums kick off a big year for themselves with the powerful track ‘Struggle’, which will undoubtedly leave fans filled with excitement ahead of their second studio album ‘From Nothing to a Little Bit More’.
The stereotypical ‘tricky’ second album seems almost a laughable notion for Wigan band, The Lathums based on the tracks the band have put out ahead of the release of their sophomore record in March of this year.
The new track is definitely a crowd-mover, with its big choruses, filled with the classic guitar sounds we’ve come to expect from the Wigan outfit. There is most definitely a deeper sincerity in the track, which may only be achieved by a select few artists who really care about the music they’re making. Singer/songwriter Alex Moore opens up about the struggles that he has faced and is facing in his day-to-day life. The beauty of the track is that the words may resonate with so many. “I loved you, but you didn’t care”. The band are to-the-point as you like with raw lyrics such as this.
The track was accompanied by a powerful, autobiographical music video, with the lyrics of Moore’s struggles embodied his younger self. Not only this, but the track came with an announcement from the band, introducing their new bassist following the departure of Johnny Cunliffe in October of 2022. The new man, Matty Murphy’s presence was immediately felt in his debut track for the band. The drive of the song is powerful, with flashbacks to the classic sounds of indie-rock. That being said, The Lathums bring a breath of fresh air to the world of music today. There is a huge feel of authenticity that comes with this tune. It has it all. Ranging from the soft, almost reflectional verses, to the highly emotive choruses. Moore most definitely pours his heart out in sections, where the tune becomes a build-up of emotions, let out in strong chorus.
The band have stated that the track is ‘about loss, someone who has gone from your life’, which will resonate with almost all listeners.
The track’s release precedes a run of spring tour dates, where the band will take ‘Struggle’ as well as their classics, and a good helping of their new material, (I assume) on the road with them.
Sure to be one of the albums of the year, ‘From Nothing To a Little Bit More’ is out in full on Friday, March 3rd, and it is set to be one of the albums of the year. Look out for The Lathums.
