In Conversation With #237 - LINN

Danish DIY artist LINN has just released her new EP ‘Femte Dimension’.

LINN made her debut in November 2020 with her eclectic EP Happy Metal, which was a consummate introduction to her borderless style showcasing playful and eclectic arrangements that take influence from alternative rock, future R&B and electronic lo-fi. Often accompanied by bizarre sound effects, field recordings, toy instruments, the tracks were all written, produced, and recorded by LINN herself with her then newborn child on her lap. Her music balances the mesmerising and melodic with the idiosyncratic and experimental, with added lyrics that are often based on unpretentious everyday moments conveyed with humor.

In May 2021, LINN and the band Blood Child went on a Danish tour with the artistic and visual crossover concept "Shower Me In Happy Metal", where she played her new material publicly for the first time. LINN has since gone on to support Wolf Alice, as well as appearing at a number of festivals, including SPOT festival (DK) and this summer's Roskilde Festival (DK), which was highlighted with a 5-star review in the Danish publication Undertoner, who called her music "a terrifying, hard-hitting combination of raw rock energy and musical finesse of the highest class”.

She took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.

Hey there LINN- how are you? So, your EP is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
I’m good, thank you. How are you? I’ve only released a few songs up until now, but I played quite a few shows since then, so finally putting out the new EP feels liberating. Now I can clear my head for some time and focus on performing the songs live in new constellations, I’m looking forward to work on that.

It is called ‘Femte Dimension’ - what is the meaning behind that?
The title translates “Fifth Dimension”. I think each song has different layers and sort of represent its own dimension. They move between analog instruments, like guitars and violin, and digitalized soundscapes and I think that creates a more alien dimension too.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
It was written and recorded in my living room in Copenhagen and in the basement at my boyfriend’s childhood home in Northern Denmark, Thy. I’ve recorded and mixed it alone, it’s how I feel most comfortable when making music, but it can also be kind of a lonesome and Zen-like process. So, next time my ambition is to invite more people into the process at some point, just to see if it will freak me out, haha.

What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
It’s darker and moodier than my former EP. These past years have been strange, and it has affected everybody’s mind in some way or the other. We’ve become more physically and mentally distant while at the same time we’re being sucked even deeper into this online digitalized dimension, it’s scary, maybe fascinating, I’m not sure. So, it’s influenced by all these inner conflicts, frustrations and insecurities that has taken up more space in our heads. But the lyrics are also about trying to care about the cute banalities of life.

If the EP could be the soundtrack to any film - which one would it be and why?
“Alien”, because I have a thing for sci-fi and because it’s about a woman being the one defeating the monster. The original movie, of course, and then shown in 5D.

Now the EP is out there - what next?
I’m more than ready to travel and to play my songs live. But I’ve also slowly started working on an album, and I’m pretty eager to write new songs and maybe play with new directions for the production.
