Daisy World - 'break it off'
Multi-instrumentalist DAISY WORLD returns with new track ‘break it off’ in one hand, and the announcement of her much awaited solo debut album, TOOTHPICK, in the other.
First making a name for herself via the much-loved but sadly no longer active band DAISY, Daisy Hemel-Buffa continued to ride a wave of success that saw her collaborate with industry titans Tyler the Creator and Steve Lacy. Now, her career as a solo artist is further solidifying with the announcement that TOOTHPICK will be out in the world February 2nd 2024.
‘break it off’ follows in the footsteps of DAISY WORLD’s other releases: a beguiling mesh of jazz, RnB and indie influences. On the track, Hemel-Buffa’s voice floats above an undercurrent of hazy synths, propelled forwards by the pulsing beat. Her effortless jazz-esque vocal infuses the track with a laid back vibe. Singing about the realisation that someone isn’t the right fit, Hemel-Buffa shrugs it off with the confidence of someone who has finally come to realise what they want – and perhaps most importantly, don’t want.
Offering deeper insight into the track’s inspiration Hemel-Buffa said: "I wrote this one morning after my second and final date with a guy who wasn't looking for the same kind of relationship as me. In the past I would have just gone along with it but as I've gotten older I've learned that to get what I REALLY want…I need to say “no! goodbye!” to the things I DON'T want…so I walked away even though he was a really good kisser…"
Closing with an almost ethereal layering of harmonising punctuated with distorted chatter, DAISY WORLD encapsulates the duality of being in your 20s: becoming self-sure in an uncertain age. A theme which she expands on more in her upcoming album TOOTHPICK.
Chatting about the album Hemel-Buffa explains: “TOOTHPICK is a coming of age journey that I stumbled into. It's about finally having the courage and confidence to make big & spooky changes in my life, jumping off the cliff and trusting that I would land (semi) gracefully… TOOTHPICK is about removing alla that gunk stuck in between your teeth and showing the world your bright and beautiful smile."
