Artist Of The Week - ENOLA
This week’s Artist of the Week is post-punk solo artist ENOLA - who has just unleashed their debut EP ‘All Is Forgiven’.
Taking inspiration from the upfront poetry of Patti Smith, the melancholic atmospherics of Joy Division and the snarling conviction of IDLES, ENOLA brings these influences into their full-band sound matched by their background in electronic music production. They teamed up with producer Bonnie Knight (Amyl and the Sniffers, Angie McMahon, Platonic Sex) to record All Is Forgiven at Naarm/Melbourne’s Soundpark Studios, and together with their band - Maya Alexandra (bass), Joshua Prendergast (guitar) and James Tyrell (drums) - were razor-focused on preserving the cathartic and intense energy of their live shows that have left a trail of fans in their wake: “To understand it, you gotta see it live,” Marshall insists.
They took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.
Hey there Enola - how are you? So your EP is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Hello, it so exciting to finally have the EP out in the world. I’ve been working on this body of music for quite some time and have had the opportunity to perform the songs live a lot over the last 12 months so now putting it out into the world feels cathartic.
It is called ‘All Is Forgiven’ - what is the meaning behind that?
I’m talking about the importance of forgiving yourself and others and the ability to let go and surrender to the moment unfolding in front of you. I’ve spent too much time in my life looking backwards and punishing myself over things I cannot change, I also feel that a lot of people experience this and it is a deep wish for myself & others to experience being free from the past.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
The EP was recorded for the most part at sound Park studios in Naam. The song’s off the EP were more the most part writing about things I was experiencing at the time. I do this almost out of necessity to be able to understand on a deeper level the experience I’m having. By writing and creating music I about this experiences i almost find myself learning how I actually feel, through the process of creation my heart revealed itself to me.
What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
Impermanence, the nature of change.
Key themes on the EP would be impermanence, forgiveness, love and longing, and the things of the past.
If the EP could be the soundtrack to any film - which one would it be and why?
I think my songs would work well on something like Requiem for a dream or Trainspotting.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP - if so, which one and why?
The poem section in Miss you would currently be my favourite and most tender lyrics.
Now the EP is out there - what next?
Next on the table is recording the album over summer and going overseas early next year.
