Live Review: Biig Piig - Electric Brixon, London 23/03/2023
The radiant Biig Piig made an incredible appearance at her sold out show at London’s Electric Brixton. The Irish singer and songwriter who recently dropped her debut mixtape ‘Bubblegum,’ is well underway on her headline UK and EU tour alongside Yunè Pinku as her opening act.
With bicultural roots in Ireland and Spain, Biig Piig has been on the upcoming scene for a few years now, and with her debut mixtape and headline tour, she’s proven that she’s not going anywhere anytime soon and rightfully so.
A crowd of 1500 people patiently waited for the singer on Thursday evening. One of dance music’s most nonconformist and exciting upcoming acts Yunè Pinku kept the crowd grooving until then. The South London born and raised artist carved her niche by making lo-fi bedroom pop soundscapes.
Even with a low-key and subtle presence on stage, her experimental sounds of UK garage, house and dance music didn’t go unnoticed. Subdued by dim blue lights, Yunè Pinku made a compelling stage presence with her soft voice layered between dance rhythms. Having played a 30-minute set, it’s clear that Yunè will not conform to a specific genre but that is what makes her one of the most exciting acts in the scene.
Without further ado, Biig Piig made it to the stage packed with immense energy and enthusiasm opening with her groovy banger from her new mixtape ‘This is What They Meant.’
It was evident that even though the mixtape had been released fairly recently, the crowd studied the 7-track debut well, knowing every word and every drop having the same roaring impact on ‘In The Dark’ and ‘Ghosting’ later on.
Starting on a more somber and mellow note, the initial part of the show explored her earlier work with ‘Don’t Turn Around’ and ‘Sunny.’ With an ethereal aesthetic complimenting her music, she delved into a dream pop state of mind.
Empowering her bicultural identity, on ‘Perida’ she sang every lyric about loneliness in Spanish beautifully stirring a soulful singalong with the crowd, with folks screaming in return the catchy hooks “I just wanna lay here / Smoke my cig and drink my wine” with high emotion.
What started as a mellow dreamy soulful vibe quickly changed into different genres with more pop punk indie bangers like ‘Oh No’ and ‘American Beauty.’ It soon turned into an intimate rave with ‘Picking Up’ and ‘Switch’ providing more drum ‘n’ bass rhythms and choruses. The hip-hop beat tracks with live drums on ‘Liahr’ made the crowd even more bouncy as the bass thumped through the floor. Not once did this affect the softness of her vocals, it was the perfect collusion given the heavier production.
Her tracks ‘Feels Right’ and ‘Kerosene’ were the last dance offs to end the set with the singer not showing any signs of slowing down. If you didn’t know a lot of her music, it didn’t matter because it made you move anyway and that’s what it is about. It was safe to say that Biig Piig is so worth the hype and is a guaranteed good time. With everyone bopping along, the reception to her sold out show is a testament to what a bright future she holds.
