Sofie Winterson - 'Jump'

Dutch artist Sofie Winterson has just released her new pop single ‘Jump’, which comes at the same time as the announcement of her new Benny Sings-produced album ‘Southern Skies’.

Sofie’s warm and intriguing pop sound listens like a comforting hug and brings a colourful soundscape fronted by a gentle voice. The Amsterdam-based musician writes reflective lyrics and enticing alternative pop soundscapes, and single ‘Jump’ is another perfect example of the signature Winterson-sound. The upcoming album, on which ‘Jump’ will appear, is a continuation and expansion of the 2019 EP ‘Moral’. ‘Jump’ offers a soothing reassurance with its subtle sound and carefully crafted spring vibe, the song being driven by warm indie pop influences.

About her latest, Sofie says: “‘Jump’ is about wanting to make a big change in life, but not knowing where that change will take you. It’s meant to comfort you in this state of insecurity. It can encourage you not to overthink where that change will lead you, since you will be a different person by the time you get there.” The album she created primarily in Benny Sings’ Amsterdam-based studio is promised to be an equally eclectic mix of influences as ‘Jump’, with hints at indie, alt and dream pop, as well as inspiration taken from soul and folk.

This more minimal sound suits her incredibly well, ‘Jump’ is the shoulder I would lean on, when it seems the jump is too scary to make, and inspires to take the risk anyway. With a plethora of Dutch-spoken hits taken over the Dutch charts nowadays, it is refreshing to hear a more internationally focused pop sound coming from the Dutch music scene. With ‘Jump’ Sofie Winterson turned me on to her sound and made me curious enough to listen to some of her previously released work.

From what I have heard so far it seems I will be enjoying ‘Southern Skies’ just as much, with the promise of her lyrics and storytelling being front and centre on the album. “What I try to do in my lyrics is to find the best way to describe a thought. The thought could be anything, it’s always my challenge to try and find exactly the right words.” ‘Jump’ is now available on Excelsior Recordings and album ‘Southern Skies’ will follow on the 9th of June.
