Introducing #259 - Rowdy Outsider

Let us introduce you to indie Irish punks Rowdy Outsider, who have just released their latest single ‘2 Dead Cats’ - a track about loss, hopelessness and the brave face we’ve all put on at some stage in our lives.

Formed in 2018, the band released their debut single in January 2020 and have since followed up with a string of independent releases in the last two years. 2022 saw the band play extensively in the Dublin scene, performing in venues including The Workman’s Club, The Sound House and a sold out headline show in Whelan’s. Alongside playing live, the band spent the latter part of 2022 writing and recording new music. With a sound that recalls early Green Day and Sum 41, 2023 promises an angrier, louder and more mature Rowdy Outsider.

They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Hey there Rowdy Outsider - how are you? So your track ‘2 Dead Cats’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Hey! We’re great, we’re so happy to have 2 DEAD CATS finally out in the world.
The song on the surface is about the death of two beloved pets but is also inspired by the dark side of social media. It’s about how you never know what you will see on your feed and coming across something you really don’t want to see at a bad time.

Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
We’re from Drogheda, Ireland. We spend most of our time drinking coffee together. There’s two coffee shops on every corner here so when we’re not in rehearsal or recording together you’ll find us drinking an alarming amount of coffee.

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
Our main musical inspirations have come from early 2000s alternative bands like My Chemical Romance and Green Day. We try to blend those nostalgic sounds with a modern twist through our lyrics and production techniques.
We’re also hugely inspired by so many amazing new Irish acts in the scene right now so we’re really pushing ourselves to bring something unique to the table.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Our sound is a mix of dark, moody emo music with fast, punk inspired performance and sonics.

Now the track is out there - what next for you?
We have our next three songs lined up that we’re finishing recording right now and can’t wait for everyone to hear. Our next single will be coming in the summer which we’re starting to shoot a video for soon and we’re super excited about it.
